The first Adams to abandon the Republicans for the Democratic Party because of his disaffection for Reconstruction reforms, John Quincy Adams II found his path to high office blocked by his conservatism in a progressive state. Although elected to the state legislature four times, John Quincy’s repeated and unsuccessful bids for the governor’s chair became the subject of national humor. Courtesy National Park Service.

Adding considerably to Adams’s satisfaction was the April birth of his second grandson. John Quincy’s wife, Fanny, had given birth to a son, John Quincy III, the year before in February 1862, so the second son was christened George Caspar Adams after Charles Francis Sr.’s unfortunate eldest brother. “And the political news is quite favorable,” a delighted Adams observed. “So with the exception about Charles’s position, things were very encouraging.” Charles Francis Jr. took the news with less equanimity. Hoping to finish his service and father the next generation of Adams men, he adopted the attitude toward females typical of his family. “I congratulate you on your increase of family and hope that next time it will be a girl,” he wrote from Potomac Run. “But don’t have too many, or I’m damned if I come to pass my Sundays with you.”21
